WJW? Kick it on the Upper West Side, where you can break bread, view biblical art and even walk on water.
5 Amazing as they are, skip the half-pound cookies that Levain Bakery (167 W 74th St between Amsterdam and Columbus Aves; 212-874-6080, levainbakery.com) is known for; you’re here to break bread. The intoxicating smell of artisanal handmade loaves baking in the oven will make you an easy convert. Choose from olive-herb ($6.50) or seeded semolina ($6.50), sourdough boule ($5.25), ciabatta ($4.50) and whole-wheat raisin ($6.75), and don’t forget to share—it’s not like this is your last supper.

Don has been working at the bakery for a while now and most customers will recognize his bright smile when they come into the bakery. I can not pinpoint the specific amount of time he has been here because he kind of “comes and go’s”. He is an opera singer and has to leave us often for performances all over the country. When he leaves, we are all very sad to see him go but are so happy that he is doing so well pursuing his dream. When he comes back, as he just did this week, we are happy that he can step back into the bakery and it is as if he never left! Welcome back Don!

Most days, you will see Katie behind our retail counter with her big smile and very gracious, bubbly attitude. I knew Lauren was the perfect fit for the bakery the minute she came in for her interview. With her bright smile and very enthusiastic attitude she “wowed” us all instantly. She is a talented baker who is very creative and lots of fun to have around. Along with working production, she helps me with mostly everything that goes on the bakery.
What fascinates me the most is that even on a hectic Saturday, when we are baking all day long, she always manages to look so stylish and neat. (I could probably use a few pointers on that topic!J)
